Epic draw against defending Champions League winners

Athletic, buoyed by an outstanding Unai Simón and a magnificent San Mamés, remain alive in the competition

Athletic Club earned a fine point against European champions Paris Saint Germain thanks to a tremendous team effort, sensational saves by Unai Simón and a San Mamés crowd that lent a hand when Luis Enrique's side threw everything at them.

The 0-0 draw against the tournament's top-scoring team, a side that had scored 19 goals in their previous five games, speaks volumes about the epic encounter.

It was a night to be proud of. A clash of philosophies at opposite ends of the spectrum that ended in a draw.

The Lions remain on five points but still have plently to play for heading into our two final matches in January, the first away to Atalanta in Bergamo and the second against Sporting CP at San Mamés. It looks like we'll need two wins.

Ernesto Valverde's set themselves up very well and made life difficult for the Parisians.

Alex Berenguer threatened first, forcing Matvei Safonov to pad away a dangerous free-kick. At the other end, Unai Simón saved a point-blank shot from Senny Mayulu at the end of the first half. That's when the 'Simón show' began.

The energy spent in trying to stop Vitinha, Joao Neves, Bradley Barcola and company took its toll in the second half, with PSG throwing everything they had at us in the first quarter of an hour.

San Mames sweated as Barcola and Warren Zaire-Emery forced Simón into two great saves. The shotstopper made himself as big as possible to help distract a dazzling burst from Barcola, who smashed the crossbar with a powerful shot.

Valverde made the right decision by bringing on fresh legs, and Athletic pushed forward, with Berenguer firing in a couple of shots.

There was one last sigh of relief for Athletic fans. Man of the match Unai Simón did his best to shut out Fabián Ruiz, and the keeper was helped by Yuri Berchiche, who cleared the ball off the line.

Yuri, playing out of position in central defence next to Dani Vivian, was outstanding against his former team.

The San Mames crowd did the rest, urging academy players like Asier Hierro, Alejandro Rego and Unai Gómez to keep up the pressure.

It was a draw born of pure pride, eleven Basque lads slugging it out with the reigning European champions.
